Loyly in Japan: Where to Experience It

2026-07-265 min read

Loyly (löyly) is the Finnish word for the burst of steam created when water is poured on hot sauna stones — and the soft, enveloping heat it releases. In the last decade, this Finnish ritual has become one of the biggest trends in Japanese sauna culture. Here's what it is and where to experience it in a Japanese hotel.

What Loyly Actually Is

In a dry sauna, the air is hot but relatively still. When you pour water on the heater stones, the water flash-evaporates into a wave of moist heat that rolls across the room. That wave is the loyly. It makes the heat feel deeper and more intense without raising the temperature, and it's the heart of the Finnish sauna experience.

Why Japan Does It So Well

Japan embraced loyly with characteristic precision. Two formats dominate:

  • Auto loyly (オートロウリュ). A timer-controlled system pours water on the stones at set intervals — often every 15 or 30 minutes — sometimes paired with a fan that circulates the steam. It's reliable and dramatic.
  • Self loyly (セルフロウリュ). A ladle and bucket are provided, and guests pour water themselves. This is closer to the Finnish tradition, where the person nearest the heater asks "may I throw water?" before pouring.

Japanese facilities also pay close attention to the water itself — some use infused water (birch, hinoki cypress, tea) to scent the steam.

Etiquette for Self Loyly

  • Always ask the room before pouring — a simple gesture and "royly, ii desu ka?" is understood.
  • One or two ladles is plenty. Don't douse the stones.
  • Pour slowly over the stones, not the heater elements.
  • If there's no ladle or sign, it's likely an auto-loyly room — just wait for the cycle.

Tip: Auto-loyly cycles are usually announced by a chime or a sign showing the schedule. If you see a ladle and bucket instead, it's self-loyly — ask the room before you pour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is loyly the same as a steam room?

No. A steam room is a separate, constantly humid space. Loyly is a burst of steam created by pouring water on the stones of a dry sauna — the heat spikes briefly, then settles.

Will loyly make the sauna unbearably hot?

It intensifies the heat for a minute or two, which is the point. If it's too much, move to a lower bench or step out — it passes quickly.

Can I do self loyly anywhere there's a ladle?

Only if the facility allows it. Look for a sign inviting guests to pour, and always ask the room first. If there's no ladle, it's an auto-loyly room.
