Sauna temperatures

Of the 1,478 hotels that publish a sauna temperature, the average is 89.9°C and the median 90°C. Japanese hotel saunas run hot: 1,021 hotels (69.1%) sit at 90°C or above.

Cold-bath (mizuburo) temperatures

1,252 hotels publish a cold-bath temperature. The average is 16.7°C — squarely in the range sauna enthusiasts consider ideal — and 27 hotels keep theirs in single digits.

Tattoo policies, loyly and outdoor baths

Tattoo acceptance is still the exception: 338 of 3,142 hotels (10.8%) explicitly welcome tattooed guests. Loyly is available at 679 hotels (21.6%), and 940 hotels (29.9%) pair the sauna with an outdoor bath.

Nightly rates

Across 3,005 hotels with published rates, the median cheapest plan is ¥9,460 per night, and 53.2% start under ¥10,000 — a sauna stay in Japan is more affordable than most visitors expect.

Where the sauna hotels are

Sauna-equipped hotels exist in all 47 prefectures. Hokkaido leads with 288 hotels (9.2% of the national total).
