We analyzed 3,142 sauna-equipped hotels across all 47 prefectures — the largest structured dataset of its kind. Here is what the numbers say about hotel sauna culture in Japan.

  • The average hotel sauna in Japan runs at 89.9°C (across 1,478 hotels that publish a temperature).
  • 69.1% of measured hotel saunas are 90°C or hotter, and 17.5% reach 100°C or more.
  • The average cold bath is 16.7°C — 27 hotels chill theirs to single digits.
  • Only 10.8% of sauna hotels (338 of 3,142) explicitly welcome tattooed guests.
  • 21.6% offer loyly: 508 self-service and 171 automatic.

Sauna temperatures

Of the 1,478 hotels that publish a sauna temperature, the average is 89.9°C and the median 90°C. Japanese hotel saunas run hot: 1,021 hotels (69.1%) sit at 90°C or above.

Cold-bath (mizuburo) temperatures

1,252 hotels publish a cold-bath temperature. The average is 16.7°C — squarely in the range sauna enthusiasts consider ideal — and 27 hotels keep theirs in single digits.

Tattoo policies, loyly and outdoor baths

Tattoo acceptance is still the exception: 338 of 3,142 hotels (10.8%) explicitly welcome tattooed guests. Loyly is available at 679 hotels (21.6%), and 940 hotels (29.9%) pair the sauna with an outdoor bath.
